Miller’s Restaurant, Minneapolis, 1920
On January 16, 1920, the United States of America, afflicted by the Volstead Act, went dry, and a new beverage came into the world: near beer.
The food critic and writer Waverley Root described the common American near beer as “such a wishy-washy, thin, ill-tasting, discouraging sort of slop that it might have been dreamed up by a Puritan Machiavelli with the intent of disgusting drinkers with genuine beer forever.”
Miller’s Restaurant, 126 Washington Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Demolished.
